FACTS:
Executive Order 13423 was signed in 2007 requiring the federal government to reduce its energy consumption by 30% by 2015. With the government’s increasing energy costs due to technology demands for more capabilities, data storage and energy and shrinking budgets, comes a need for efficient and cost-effective IT practices and uses. In response to the mandate and government necessities, ECS offers Green IT Solutions which highlight our commitment to energy savings best practices.
CASE STUDY:
Our commitment to energy savings best practices is best demonstrated through ECS’ investment to engineer, build and outfit an IT test bed for the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES). We are committed to the blade migration, virtualization effort, and the administration of the virtual server and virtual machine environment. Through the use of blade servers, combined with virtualization technology, we found that we consume half as much power as the older servers, resulting in significant energy savings. Blade servers’ centralized power distribution and cooling systems eliminate the need for power supplies in each system component. This unique design enables blade systems to reduce cost, heat, and power usage. With ECS’ migration of 25 physical Windows and Linux servers from a physical to virtual environment and with the utilization of blade servers, we help consolidate server platforms and conserve energy implying future cost savings for a smaller network footprint and reduced power demands.
